Overview
Venepuncture is the introduction of a needle into a vein, to obtain a blood sample for haematological, bacteriological or biochemical analysis.
Intravenous (IV) Cannulation is the process of inserting a cannula inside a vein to deliver intravenous fluids or intravenous medications.
By the end of the course you:
- Will be able to develop the knowledge and an understanding of peripheral IV cannulation
- Will be able to develop the knowledge and an understanding of performing Venepuncture
- Will have revised the anatomy and physiology necessary in performing effective Venepuncture and IV cannulation
- Will become aware of, understand and follow infection control procedures
- Will be able to consider the professional and legal implications relating to cannulation and venepuncture
Training Steps
1. Application
Your application to undertake this course will be based on the relevance of these skills, to your area. This can be discussed with your Line Manager, who will then email your details to huh-tr.internalcourses@nhs.net
2. E-Learning Assessments
Venepuncture -The Learner will be sent a link to register for the e-Learning required for Venepuncture. Upon registration, using the same link, the Learner will be able to gain access to the Venepuncture e-Learning Assessment modules.
IV Cannulation – The Learner will be sent a link to register for the e-Learning for IV Cannulation. Upon registration, using the same link, the Learner will be able to gain access to the IV Cannulation e-Learning Assessment modules.
Learners MUST complete all modules outlined.
YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE FACE TO FACE PRACTICAL IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED ALL E-LEARNING MODULES.
3. Practical Skills Training
Once you have successfully completed the e-Learning modules, you will then be invited to attend a practical training session to obtain practical skills performing Venepuncture and IV Cannulation.
Please check your emails for the date and time for this training.
4. Submission of Supervised Practice Skills
You will be required to obtain 5 supervised skills of Venepuncture and/or 5 supervised skills of IV Cannulation.
Supervision must be done by a healthcare professional who has completed their training in the selected skill and are competent in performing the skill.
You will have approximately 9 weeks from the date of your Venepuncture and IV Cannulation practical session, in which to obtain and submit all supervised skills.
Failure to do so may result in you having to undertake the entire process again.
