Overview

The aim of this course will be to improve delegate’s awareness of disability. By learning more about attitudes towards disability and the barriers that disabled people face, staff are more empowered to reach positive outcomes when engaging with colleagues and line managing disabled employees.

The sessions are delivered by friendly qualified disabled trainers who have a wealth of lived experience and who pride themselves on delivering sessions that are informative, interactive and fun. They encourage questions and discussions.  This course will cover the meaning of disability, what the social model of disability is and why we use it, common misconceptions surrounding disability, barriers disabled people commonly face in the workplace and how they may be overcome, appropriate terminology and etiquette, how to discuss issues related to disability with staff, what reasonable adjustments are and how to determine if an adjustment is reasonable. 

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end oof this session, you will:

  • understand thye meaning and incidence of disability
  • be familiar with the social model of disability and the implocations of this
  • be aware of common misconceptions of surrounding disability
  • have an overview of some of the barriers that disabled people face in the workplace and ways in which these can be overcome
  • understand appropriate terminology and language etiquette
  • know how to discuss issues related to disability and access in the workplace with their staff
  • know simple ways to encourage staff to disclose that they are disbaled
  • understand what reasonable adjustements are and the factors that determine whether something is resonable
